Working with Synonode

Restore points and git

Every answer leaves a restore point. Go back a turn, rewind to any message, or work with git: commits, branches and GitHub.

Undo a turn's changes

Under a message that changed files, the change summary lists them with the lines added and removed. Revert all puts every one of those files back as it was before that turn.

Rewind to an earlier message

Type /rewind, or press Esc twice in an empty message box, and pick a message. Then choose what to go back:

  • The conversation: the chat continues from that message, the code stays as it is.
  • The code: the files go back to how they were at that message, the chat stays.
  • Both.

Not sure the last answer was right? Rewind under your message (or /rewind) goes back to just before it and puts your words back in the box, to send again or change. /diff opens the Changes view, to read every change first.

Git

Every project is a git repository, so its whole history is kept. You don't need to know git to use Synonode, but it's there when you want it.

  • Open Source Control from the side bar, or press Ctrl Shift G, to see changes, commit them, switch or create branches, and push.
  • Smart commit (in Settings → Code) writes the commit message for you.
  • Push to GitHub with a GitHub token. Ask Synonode in the chat too: commit this and push it to a new branch.
  • Synonode knows your email (from your Synonode account, or git's own settings), so show my commits finds yours. Its own commits end with Co-Authored-By: Synonode unless you turn Commit attribution off. On a computer where git has no name or email yet, it asks you which to use before its first commit and sets them for that project only.

Pull requests

A project on GitHub shows its work:

  • In the sidebar, each project shows the lines its work changed (+12 −3) and its pull request: green while open, grey as a draft, purple once merged, red when closed.
  • In the top bar, next to the branch: the lines changed (they open Source Control), then Create PR, or the pull request's number with its checks: ✓ passed, ✕ failed, • still running. It opens the pull request on GitHub. On a phone, the pull request's mark is at the top right of the chat.
  • Create PR asks for a title, then opens it, or a draft. The branch is pushed first. It's also in Source Control's commit menu.
  • Ask in the chat: open a pull request for this, are the checks passing?, answer the review comments. Synonode makes a branch when you're on the main one, writes the title and description, reads failed checks and review comments, and fixes them on the same branch. It never merges unless you ask.

Pull requests use the GitHub account you connected in Settings → Connectors → GitHub.

Files (Ctrl Shift E) shows the project's files, and Changes every change of the branch: see Side views.

Review before you keep

/review has the changes looked over for bugs before you keep them. Add what to look at: /review the payment form.

Comment on a line

Open a change (a file in the chat's list of changes, or in Source control), point at a line and press +. In the editor's diff, click the line's number. Write what should change there: round this to two decimals. Each comment waits as a chip in the message box, and they all go with your next message, so Synonode fixes each one at its line.
